Charles has the highest number of submission wins in the franchise’s history at sixteen and the most number of finishes at the age of nineteen.

He is currently ranked first in the lightweight division and third in the men’s pound-for-pound division of the UFC as of August 22, 2022.

With conquests over some of the greatest MMA fighters in the lightweight division, like Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, and more. He is one of the most talked about athletes in the world.

The accomplishments of the UFC lightweight champion, who despatched Dustin Poirier to defend his title at the end of last year, are all the more impressive in light of his terrible eyesight. But now he has adequately healed from the problem; he wants to win titles again.

Charles Oliveira Was Nearsighted

Brazilian MMA fighter Charles Oliveira had shortsightedness or myopia, where nearby objects are seen clearly, but the farther things appear unclear. People with the condition will have trouble seeing objects exceeding 25 centimetres.

The athlete with myopia will also have trouble dealing with things with movement. Since MMA is a sport which requires speed and accuracy, a fighter requires good vision. However, vision may be defective due to various reasons for them.

One of the most common causes of shortsightedness is an eye injury, which MMA fighters have to deal with most when they get in the ring. Some other causes could be genetics, environmental conditions, or screentime.

In the case of Oliveira, his nearsightedness is believed to be from prolonged activities, including MMA fighting. He used to wear glasses all the time. In an interview, he stated that seeing things nearer while he was in the ring was difficult. And despite the poor vision, he claims it never interfered with his fight.

During Oliveira’s run in the featherweight, he faced many setbacks. Once, an MMA fighter had severely injured his neck in training. Oliveira is thought to have twisted his neck and shoulder while going for the takedown and sustained the tear. Despite the seriousness of the injuries, Oliveria bounced back quickly and was able to return to the octagon a few months later.

Charles Oliveira Heals From Eye Surgery

Oliveira has notified that he had healed from short-sightedness. However, following this, he had to go for vision correction surgery this year.

In particular, vision correction surgery is performed via the most common procedures like LASIK and PRK. Another option is a lens implant, which is not feasible for a sportsperson like Oliveira, who undergoes hard training and movements throughout their career.

Nevertheless, Oliveira successfully got through the procedure to fix his vision. As a result, the MMA fighter claims he will no longer see three opponents in the ring, and the surgery has results immaculate.

Oliveira said: “I see three faces. Three guys for me is perfect. If I take my glasses off, I only see 50 per cent but it never hindered me in a fight. I had the surgery, and my eyes are 100 per cent perfect. I can see everything now.”

He continued: “Sometimes I walk in without the glasses, sometimes I walk in with the glasses. It depends on my vibe. Sometimes I like to walk in with the glasses to look harmless and nerdier than I already am. And when I take off my glasses, it’s normal. I can see the opponent on the other side. God blesses me so much that I can see normal. But on the street, if I take it off, I’m blind.”

The former light heavyweight champion will look to claim his belt back after five losing streaks. He believes he will finish Islam Makhachev at the UFC 280 on October 22, 2022, at the Etihad Arena.

The MMA fighter had spent his childhood in the streets of Guaruja, Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was deprived of education, good food, and clothes. It is undoubtedly impressive that he has accomplished what he has and reached his heights.

Oliveira has also said his parents have worked hard for his sports dream by working two jobs. In addition, he has opened up about his upbringing in many interviews.
