Lindsay was born on January 24, 1991, in Roselle, Illinois, United States, to her parents, Becky and Milton Flanagan. She spends her childhood with her father and mother in her hometown.

Similarly, Shalane was born on July 8, 1981, in Marblehead, Massachusetts, United States, to her parents, Cheryl and Steve Flanagan. Both of her parents are well-established runners as well.

Steve Flanagan, her father, was a U.S. World Cross Country Champion and marathon runner (P.R. 2:18). He raised Shalane and her sister Maggie in Marblehead with his second wife, Monica.

Her mother, Cheryl Treworgy, is a former long-distance runner from the United States who formerly held the American and international marathon records in the 1960s and 1970s. She was the first female runner to grace the cover of a running publication.

She began running as a student at Indianapolis North Central High School. She competed in the national cross-country championships during her final year of high school.

Treworgy was the first female athlete in the United States to obtain an athletic scholarship at a public university, Indiana State University, which did not have a women’s program at the time she entered. She earned a degree in physical education in three years.

She finished fourth in the World Cross Country Championships in Scotland in 1969. Moreover, the runner’s mother achieved U.S. records in the 3-mile and 5,000-meter runs before being trained by Bill Dellinger. She finished third in the U.S. cross-country championships in 1971.

Cheryl was named into the Indiana Track and Cross Country Hall of Fame in 1983, the Indiana State University Athletic Recognition Hall in 1984, and the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame in 1987.

Lindsay Flanagan Takes Shalane As Her Idol
