Where Is Hilaree Nelson Now? Missing Ski Mountaineer Has Husband Jim Morrison In Worry

Hilaree Nelson was skiing down Mount Manaslu with her partner, Jim Morrison, in Nepal on September 26, 2022, when she fell into a 2,000-foot crevasse.

She is still missing as of September 27, 2022, since initial rescue efforts were delayed by severe weather.

One of the most accomplished ski mountaineers in the world, Hilaree, and James, have scaled many mountains while continuously testing their boundaries.

On Monday at noon, a disaster occurred while they were out on one of their many mountaineering expeditions. An Avalanche led to the missing many mountain climbers in Manaslu on Monday. Although numerous Nepali guides have started climbing the mountain, rescue operations for the lost are now on hold owing to bad weather.

Four climbing guides suffered critical injuries, and nine had minor wounds. Shree Hari Kuikel of Kailash Helicopter Services stated, “We have evacuated three individuals and have admitted them to Karuna Hospital in Bansbari.”

Dr. Yukta Gurung of Icefall, who is at the base camp, claimed that the avalanche was brought on by constant snowfall. It had been snowing steadily for 15 days. At least five to six feet of snow had been built up in the region when the avalanche occurred.

After reaching the “true summit” of Mt. Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 meters, Hilaree and James returned together.

Jeevan Ghimire, managing director of Shangrila-Nepal Treks, the firm in charge of their adventure, told the Kathmandu Post that “something unexpected happened above 8,000 meters, the danger zone, where the pressure of oxygen is insufficient to sustain human life.”

The mountaineering team intended to ski down the razor-sharp ridge in search of one of the world’s most dangerous vertical drops. The planned drop was 8,000 meters down its face. Ghimire remarked, “Unfortunately, Hilaree split and plunged into a crevasse. “

Rescue operations are hampered by bad weather, but a helicopter is ready for a search and rescue early on Tuesday morning, according to Bigyan Koirala, a representative of the Department of Tourism. This government organization grants climbing licenses.

Hilaree Nelson is her generation’s most active ski mountaineer, with a career spanning two decades and dozens of first descents over more than 40 missions to 16 different nations.

Last year, Hilaree and her boyfriend Jim completed the first ski descent of Lhotse, the fourth-tallest mountain in the world.

The 45-year-old mother of two became the first woman to summit Everest and Lhotse in a single 24-hour attempt, linking the two 8000-meter summits. Then, in the fall of 2018, she revisited 27,940-foot Lhotse to ski from the summit while connecting turns down one of the most coveted un-skied lines in the world.

Hilaree spent her weekend skiing at Stevens Pass in the Washington Cascades while growing up in Seattle. Hilaree purchased a one-way ticket to Chamonix, France, after graduating from college, and that decision would forever alter her life.

She became familiar with the basics of ski mountaineering during her first season. After participating in her first TNF adventure to India, Hilaree realized she had a climbing aptitude and became addicted.

She was awarded a National Geographic Explorers grant in 2014 to organize a risky expedition to the little-explored mountain of Hkakabo Razi in Myanmar’s far north.

Hilaree went back to Lhotse in 2018 to ski from the summit, one of the most coveted un-skied lines in the world. Lhotse is the fourth-highest peak and one of the hardest mountain climbing in the world at 8,516 meters.

She was selected captain of The North Face Athlete Team in 2018, a position that has only ever been held by one other athlete, Conrad Anker.

Among her achievements is the first ski descent of Lhotse Couloir in 2018, the first ski descent of Papsura Peak in India in 2017, the first ski descent of Messner Couloir in June 2017, the first female skier of Makalu La Couloir in Nepal in 2015, and the simultaneous ascent of Everest and Lhotse in 2012.
